Sod Done Right in Destrehan
Big Easy Sod serves Destrehan with the same crew, the same standard, and the same one-day installs we've brought to every neighborhood in the greater New Orleans area. NOLA-specific sod. No-show-free scheduling. Transparent pricing.
We Know This Area
Destrehan sits on the east bank of the Mississippi in St. Charles Parish, in a corridor where newer suburban subdivisions meet older River Road properties. Soil conditions vary significantly by lot age and position: newer subdivisions have been graded and may have fill-heavy soil, while older properties near the river have rich alluvial base. Big Easy Sod assesses each Destrehan property individually, the same grass selection that works in a newer subdivision may not work on a century-old lot next to it.
Why Most Lawn Jobs Fail Around Here
Louisiana clay doesn't forgive shortcuts. Most contractors take them anyway.
Sod That Dies in 30 Days
Wrong grass for the Louisiana climate. Most installers pick whatever's available, not what survives summer heat and clay soil here.
Drainage Ignored, Lawn Drowns
No grading, no drainage prep. The first real rain creates standing water. Sod roots suffocate. You're back to square one and out another contractor fee.
No-Show Crews
Scheduled for Tuesday. Showed up Friday. Or not at all. Contractors who disappear mid-job or don't call back are the reason people call Big Easy Sod.
Opaque Pricing
"Just trust us" quotes with no breakdown. Then the invoice is different. No itemization, no explanation. Just a number you didn't expect.
Big Easy Sod was built specifically around these failures. Every Destrehan job starts with an honest on-site assessment covering soil, drainage, sun exposure, and the right grass variety for where you live. We fix the problem, not just the symptom.

What Done-Right Looks Like
A real job from this area. Specific outcome. Not a vague testimonial.
Destrehan Subdivision: New Construction, Compacted Fill Soil
The builder of a new Destrehan home had installed sod as part of the final landscaping package, but it was placed directly on compacted fill without any soil prep. It was dead in 8 weeks. We pulled the failed sod, scarified the compacted fill, added compost and a sandy amendment, and re-installed with Bermuda in the full-sun sections. Full yard completed in one day.
Established cleanly in 3 weeks. Homeowner said it looked better than the original builder install within a month.

About Destrehan
Destrehan is best known as the home of Destrehan Plantation, one of the oldest plantation homes open to the public in Louisiana. Beyond the historic landmark, it is a growing residential community in St. Charles Parish with a mix of older river parish homes and newer subdivisions built closer to the I-310 corridor. Soil quality varies significantly between the well-drained natural levee near the river and the lower-lying areas that require drainage attention before sod can be installed.
Why Lawns Matter Here
- River-adjacent lots on the natural levee drain significantly better than inland parcels
- Newer I-310 corridor subdivisions sit on lower ground and require full drainage assessment before install
- Open-sun suburban lots are strong candidates for Bermuda, with St. Augustine for shaded sections
A Few Things About Destrehan
Destrehan Plantation, built in 1787, is one of the oldest surviving plantation homes in the lower Mississippi Valley.
The plantation is open for tours year-round and hosts a popular Renaissance Festival each November.
Destrehan sits in St. Charles Parish, part of the historic German Coast along the Mississippi River.
The community has seen significant residential growth since the expansion of the I-310 interchange improved access to Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
