Sod Maintenance & Lawn Care
Louisiana-specific fertilization, core aeration, and pest control. NOLA lawns need NOLA timing, not a generic national calendar
Learn moreMechanical aeration opens compacted clay soil for water and nutrient absorption. One of the most effective things you can do for a New Orleans lawn that stops responding to maintenance
New Orleans clay soil compacts hard. When it does, water pools on the surface, nutrients cannot reach the root zone, and the grass struggles even with a solid fertilization and watering program. Mechanical aeration pulls core plugs from the soil and opens the structure for air, water, and nutrients to move through again
Clay compaction is not a sign of poor maintenance. It is a structural issue with NOLA soil that affects most residential lawns regardless of care level. Aeration should be part of any long-term lawn program in the metro area, especially for St. Augustine in shaded yards and Bermuda in high-traffic zones
Dethatching addresses a different problem: the dead grass layer that builds up above the soil crown. In NOLA's humid climate, thatch accumulates faster than in drier regions. When it exceeds half an inch, it blocks water and nutrients at the surface. We assess thatch depth before recommending dethatching alongside or instead of aeration

Hollow-tine plugs pulled from the soil to improve water, air, and nutrient penetration through NOLA clay. The most effective approach for compacted residential lawns.
Soil conditioner applied where mechanical aeration would damage irrigation lines or surface features. Less invasive but also less aggressive for severe compaction.
Removes the dead grass mat above the soil crown that blocks water and nutrients at the surface. Recommended when thatch depth exceeds half an inch.
Application of compost or sand mix into aeration holes to improve soil structure over time. Combined with core aeration for persistent clay compaction.

Our crew handles everything: removing old turf, grading the soil, laying the sod correctly the first time. Most residential installs are done in a single day.
We walk you through care instructions, answer your questions, and leave the yard clean. Then we get out of your way and let the grass do its thing.
Most NOLA lawns benefit from aeration once per year. Lawns with heavy clay compaction, significant foot traffic, or poor drainage may benefit from two passes annually. We assess the soil before recommending a frequency.
Late spring to early summer when NOLA grass is actively growing. Warm-season grasses like St. Augustine and Bermuda recover from aeration faster when soil temperatures are above 60 degrees and the lawn is pushing new growth.
The plugs pulled out leave small holes in the turf that fill back in within two to four weeks. The short-term appearance is worth it. Most lawns look noticeably better within three to four weeks as water and nutrients reach the root zone again.
Core aeration physically removes plugs from the soil, the most effective treatment for severe compaction. Liquid aeration uses a soil conditioner that loosens the soil chemistry without mechanical disruption. We use liquid aeration where mechanical equipment would damage irrigation lines.
That depends on the thatch depth. We probe the lawn before recommending. Aeration alone addresses compaction. If thatch is blocking the surface, dethatching needs to happen first. Doing aeration over heavy thatch limits its effectiveness.
After. Aeration opens channels that allow fertilizer to reach the root zone more effectively. Applying within two to three days after aeration significantly improves nutrient uptake, especially in NOLA clay soil where surface runoff is a constant issue.
